Charging infrastructure gaps, sticker prices, and range anxiety have all slowed adoption more than optimists expected. The direction was right. The speed was very wrong.

This was the moonshot that kept getting pushed. The timeline has shifted so many times it’s become a running joke in aerospace circles. As of 2026, no human has set foot on Mars, and a crewed mission still sits firmly in the “aspirational” column. Robotic missions continue, and launch vehicle development is genuinely impressive, but the human part of the equation remains years away at minimum.

The Electric Vehicle Shift — Just Not Where Predicted

But the original vision was something closer to ubiquity — most cars, most roads, most of the time. That hasn’t happened. Some predictions are neither confirmed nor dead — they’re just slow.

Brain-computer interfaces are past the animal-testing phase. Human trials have produced genuinely striking early results: people controlling cursors and communicating through implanted devices. The technology is real. Whether it becomes mainstream medical infrastructure or remains a narrow clinical tool is still an open question.

Steering wheels disappearing from cars depends entirely on when full autonomy actually arrives. The hardware trend points that direction. The regulatory reality keeps pushing it back.

AI eliminating the need to work is the biggest open question of all. Automation is already reshaping white-collar work faster than most labor economists expected two years ago. Whether that leads to abundance and optional work or widespread displacement without a safety net is a policy and economic question as much as a technological one. The machinery for the prediction is clearly running. Where it lands is genuinely uncertain.

The AI Warnings Are a Different Category

Predictions about AI being potentially more dangerous than nuclear weapons, or autonomous weapons systems becoming a serious threat, don’t score as true or false the same way an EV market share figure does. These were risk warnings, not forecasts.

What’s worth noting: the conversations happening right now in governments, militaries, and research labs about AI safety and autonomous weapons closely mirror the concerns that were raised years ago when many people dismissed them as science fiction. The warnings haven’t been proven right by a catastrophe. But they’ve also stopped sounding ridiculous to serious people.

What the Scorecard Actually Tells You

The pattern across all of this is consistent: the direction of the big technology calls has generally held up better than the timing. EVs are growing. Autonomy is real. Human-machine interfaces exist. AI is transforming work.

The specific dates and percentages? Those were almost all too aggressive.

That’s worth remembering the next time you hear a confident prediction with a year attached to it — including from anyone making them today. The technology often arrives. The schedule almost never does.
